What is GST Billing Software?
GST billing software generates GST-compliant invoices with all mandatory fields — GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, CGST/SGST/IGST breakdowns, place of supply, and IRN for e-invoicing — as required by the Indian GST Act. It should also generate e-way bills for goods movement and export data for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B GST return filing.
Mandatory Fields in a GST-Compliant Invoice
Under the CGST Rules 2017, every tax invoice must contain these fields. An invoice missing any mandatory field is invalid for ITC claims:
e-Invoicing in India — How It Works
e-Invoicing does not mean generating a PDF and emailing it. In India, e-invoicing means registering your invoice with the government's Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) and receiving an IRN (Invoice Reference Number) and a QR code that must be printed on the invoice.
Your software creates the invoice with all mandatory fields and sends it to the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal) via API.
The IRP validates the invoice format and GSTIN, assigns an IRN (64-character hash), and digitally signs it.
The IRP returns the IRN and a signed QR code. Your billing software adds these to the final invoice PDF.
The final invoice (with IRN + QR code) is sent to the buyer. The IRP auto-populates your GSTR-1 with the invoice details.
e-Way Bill — When Required and How to Generate
An e-way bill is required for the movement of goods worth more than ₹50,000 (in most states). It must be generated before the goods leave the supplier's premises and must accompany the goods during transit.
✓ Inter-state movement of goods (any value above ₹50K) ✓ Intra-state movement above ₹50K (state-specific) ✓ Rail, road, air, and ship transport
✗ B2C sales below ₹50K value ✗ Exempted goods (specified list) ✗ Goods moved within a state below threshold ✗ Non-motorised vehicle transport
• GSTIN of supplier and recipient • Invoice number and value • HSN code and goods description • Transporter ID / vehicle number • From and to PIN codes / state
• Up to 100 km: 1 day • 100–300 km: 3 days • 300–500 km: 5 days • 500–1,000 km: 10 days • Above 1,000 km: 15 days

Frequently Asked Questions
What is GST billing software?
GST billing software is a system that generates GST-compliant invoices with the correct format, HSN/SAC codes, CGST/SGST/IGST tax breakdowns, and supplier GSTIN details as mandated by Indian GST law. Good GST billing software also generates e-invoices (IRN + QR code for businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore), e-way bills, and exports GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data for GST filing. Examples include Tally Prime, ERPNext, Zoho Books, and custom billing software by Infonoxe Technologies.
Is e-invoicing mandatory for all businesses in India?
e-Invoicing (generating an IRN — Invoice Reference Number — from the government NIC portal) is mandatory in India for B2B invoices for businesses with annual turnover above ₹5 crore. The threshold was progressively reduced from ₹500 crore (2020) to ₹5 crore (2023). Businesses below ₹5 crore turnover are not required to generate e-invoices but may do so voluntarily. B2C invoices are not in scope for e-invoicing regardless of turnover.
What is the difference between an e-invoice and an e-way bill?
An e-invoice (IRN) is a government-registered invoice reference for all B2B transactions above the threshold — it proves the invoice is authentic and registered with the GST system. An e-way bill is a separate document required for the physical movement of goods worth more than ₹50,000 across state lines or within a state (thresholds vary). Both can be generated from good GST billing software via their respective government APIs (IRP for e-invoice, NIC for e-way bill).
Can GST billing software auto-generate GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
Yes. Good GST billing software generates GSTR-1 data (all B2B and B2C outward supply details) and GSTR-3B summary (tax liability, input tax credit, and net payable) directly from your invoice data. You can export these in the GSTN-required JSON or Excel format and upload to the GST portal, or file directly via the software if it has GSTN API integration. This eliminates manual data entry for GST filing and reduces errors.
Which is the best GST billing software for small businesses in India?
Best GST billing software for small businesses in India: For accounting + GST — Tally Prime (₹18,000–₹54,000/year) or Zoho Books (₹2,500–₹7,500/month). For ERP + GST — ERPNext (₹0 licensing + implementation). For custom needs (specific industry forms, integration with your app) — custom GST billing software by Infonoxe Technologies starting at ₹40,000. If you need e-invoicing and e-way bill generation with your existing systems, Infonoxe can build an API integration starting at ₹25,000.
