What is Cycle Time?
Cycle Time is the total elapsed time from the start to the completion of a process step or the production of one unit, used to identify inefficiencies and set production rates.
Cycle Time vs Takt Time
Cycle Time: how long it actually takes to produce one unit. Takt Time: how fast you need to produce one unit to meet customer demand (Available Production Time / Customer Demand). If Cycle Time > Takt Time, you cannot meet demand — you need more capacity. If Cycle Time < Takt Time, you have spare capacity.
Cycle Time in ERPNext
ERPNext captures cycle time via Job Card time logs — Operator Start to End timestamps for each operation. Compare actual cycle time vs the planned time set in the BOM Operation. High variance indicates training gaps, machine issues, or material problems. Use this data for continuous improvement projects.
