What is ERP Upgrade?
An ERP Upgrade migrates a system from an older version to a newer release, bringing new features, compliance updates, security patches, and sometimes a UI overhaul.
ERPNext Upgrade Process
ERPNext upgrades are done using the bench CLI: "bench update --pull --patch --build". Before upgrading, back up the database, review the upgrade notes for breaking changes, test on a staging server, and verify all custom apps are compatible with the new version. Schedule during non-business hours.
Upgrade vs Re-Implementation
Minor ERPNext upgrades (v14.x → v14.y) are routine. Major version upgrades (v13 → v14) may require custom app updates and data migrations. If the system has been heavily customised over many years, a re-implementation on the latest version (with current best practices) may be more cost-effective than upgrading.
