What is Succession Planning?
Succession Planning identifies and develops internal talent to fill key leadership roles in the future, reducing the risk of operational disruption when senior employees leave.
Succession Planning Process
Identify critical positions (would leaving create significant disruption). Identify successors (1–3 candidates per role at different readiness levels: Ready Now, Ready in 1–2 Years, Ready in 3–5 Years). Create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for each successor. Review and update annually.
Using ERP for Succession Planning
ERPNext stores the data foundation for succession planning: skills and competencies (via Appraisal Templates), training history (Training Events), performance ratings (Appraisal scores), and designation history. Export this data to build succession matrices or use a dedicated HCM module.
